The History of Rangeworthy, Bagstone and Hall End – Version
3

This book has been produced by a small
group of Rangeworthy WI members. It was originally
published in 1988 and was researched and written by the WI
president Mary Isaac. To celebrate the Millennium in
2000 a second edition was slightly updated and produced.
The first two editions sold more than 200 copies and
further copies were often requested. Version 3 has been
totally revised with updates about residents and additional
properties. There is also information about the most
famous resident of Rangeworthy - Sir Matthew Hale, Lord
Chief Justice, 1609-1676. Sir Matthew Hale was related to
the Poyntz family of Acton Court and Alderley and rose to
high office through the turbulent rules of Charles 1st,
Oliver Cromwell and Charles 2nd.
The book has information about Rangeworthy Court,
Rangeworthy School, the once celebrated felt hatting
industry, mining for celestine, as well as details about
some of the older properties in the area. There is also
analysis of the change in trades and occupations of the
villagers in over a century and how the village has evolved
to what it is today.
The book was launched at Rangeworthy WI Flower Show on
Saturday September 12th. Copies cost £10 and are
available from the Rose & Crown, Rangeworthy or Liz
Edmunds (01454 228318).
